CITY ISLAND GOES TO...BRAZIL?

brazil

Yet another country that's not America seems to be showing "City island"--this time it's Brazil! So you see, upside is down, wrong is right and, as far as I can tell, the best way to get your film shown around the world in every possible exotic locale is to make sure that it takes place in a small, working-class neighborhood in the United States and has nothing whatsoever to do with anything that could possibly be construed as having "global" appeal.

Unless, of course, all families really are the same and thus the movie translates beyond borders. Below, dig the poster that's being used--and can anyone accurately translate the title? (I read it as "Confusion Is Family" and the tag line as: "His Cousins Genetics Explains It". Could this possibly be correct? If so, heavy...) The ad was sent to me a couple of days ago for "approval"--as if I was somehow going to brave the multiple language and time-zone issues and try to re-direct the poster art from my garage studio in LA. Ultimately I shrugged and said that this poster art was fine. For Brazil, that is. If Anchor Bay/Overture were to present this to us as a sales concept, I'd toss a chair across the room and demand a thorough accounting of how the advertising people got their frigging jobs to begin with. That is, I would do that after cleaning up the vomit that covered every surface of the room. Still, viz:

Thanks, JC, for posting the Russian trailer and finding the site with the dozen or so production stills. If any of you readers are interested in seeing this stuff, go to the comments section of my last post and click on JC's links (or paste them in your browser).

And yes, Marianna, if "City Island" can hit Poland, Russia and Brazil, I'm more than certain it will appear in Greece. Probably well before the US premiere in fact.

Below, a little touch of Brazil via good old "Ugly American" entertainment. Sinatra, of course, singing a song that acutally charted number 6 in 1946 and that is, alas, available only as an audio recording--at least I couldn't find any live performance footage of Frank doing it on youtube. Cheers to you, Brazil. Enjoy our damn movie. And may your cousins genetics explain the confusion in your family....

  1. Hmmm interesting translation for the poster. In Greece we tend to keep the original title when possoble-we got a more 'foreignising' approach to translation :)

Can't wait for "City island" to be released here lol Thank you for giving me hope Raymond!

  2. heh, I love how they photoshopped Emily into the photo. More people to be jealous of now. By the time I see the movie, I'll be begging people from all across the world to just tell me more, give me spoilers, etc. :) Needless to say, I expect to really enjoy this movie! And I'm glad to see another post about it, you don't know how eagerly I await each of your City Island posts Raymond! You make my day.

  3. Hi Raymond,
Nice to read that you mentioned my comment and the Russian link. It is great that City Island is going to Brazil. We have a big fan from Brazil and I am sure she is very happy now. The ad is very good. I like the big close up of Andy and the photo of the cast.

  4. I can see where that poster might your gag reflex...a little cheesy! But I do like seeing another photo of the cast members. I wish Anchor Bay would put out some soon. I emailed them and they said hopefully their film website should be up by the end of the month. I really like hearing everything you can tell us about the movie and cast. My hope is that when the DVD comes (after a long theater run of course), that there will be commentary on it...one with you and one with the cast. You cam put that down as my request ;-)

  6. Gorgeous photo of Andy on the poster. Seems strange to me that all the non-English speaking world seems to be getting to see this movie before us. Pity I can't speak Portuguese because I feel like jumping on a plane and making it to Brazil to see this film as I am going stir crazy waiting for it to be released. Hey,maybe it has sub-titles,now if I could only get some time off work.
Just wondered Raymond, with all the great reviews for the film, did you ever give any consideration to try for the Oscars, maybe for Andy as actor and the movie as Best Picture?

  8. Mein lieber Herr Raymond:

Hmmm... An accurate German to English translation of the "City Island" Brazilian title is "Family Troubles" and for the tag line "Tem coisas que só a genética explica" that means in German "there is something that only genetics can explain ( the family troubles )".

  9. Hi Raymond! I'D like to thank you for the good news! wow! I'm so glad that my heart looks jump off my mouth! thanks JC by advise me, too. I was very anxious to see this movie! Maybe I can explain better the poster in portuguese language: it´s saying in title: "confusions in the family" and below there is a comment like that: "there are things that only the genetic explain" - I think that the word "cousins" is wrong, really the word "things" in portuguese is "coisas" very alike with the word "cousins". but both words means completely different things. cousin means "primo" in portugues (parents) and things means "coisas" in portuguese (stuffs), hope that you can understand my explanation. I can´t wait to see this movie! oh my heart! cheers from Brazil, to all you. sorry my mistakes!
